- Case Studies of Military Mothers: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study on the Effects of Transcendental Meditation on Parenting Stress
Mary Doan, PhD. 2015 doctoral dissertation, Claremont Graduate School, San Diego State University [Mixed] method comparative case studies explored the role of the practice of one hundred hours of Transcendental Meditation on parenting stress, Post-traumatic symptom disorder (PTSD), life satisfaction, and sleep deprivation symptoms, Data was collected from a group of five military mothers with these inclusion criterion: children ranging in age from 1year to 18 years, military families living in southern California, military mothers being the primary caretakers of their children, husbands involved in the military, military mothers diagnosed with PTSD, and military mothers experiencing high levels of stress in military life and parenting. Unstructured interviews and case studies were means of documentation of the changes in parenting stress, life satisfaction, sleep, and PTSD pre- and post-100 hours. Observations of the military mothers and their children for content analysis were part of the monthly meetings at 25, 50, 75 and 100 hours of practice of TM. The six descriptors of content analysis were: parenting style, task orientation, maturity, communication, assertiveness, and consistency of meditation. Results showed positive growth of at least one point in these six descriptors. This research suggests that by practicing 100 or more hours of meditation, military mothers diagnosed with PTSD experienced highly positive life satisfaction change as well as improved parenting skills. The use of Transcendental Meditation can be an effective method with parents under stress in the military or within childcare facilities, preschools, schools, or teen parenting.

- FDNY Commissioner Cassano, TM and First Responders
“I wasn’t going to try to sell something like Transcendental Meditation to my guys unless I did it myself,” recalls New York Fire Department (FDNY) Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, who recently retired after serving 44 years in the fire department. “So I learned how to meditate, and I liked the results. It’s a stressful job with little sleep. Right away, I noticed a big difference. I slept better at night and I felt better during the day. I look at this as a tool in the toolbox to handle stress.”
